U.S. Virgin Islands Flag Redesign
The United States Virgin Islands are a chain of three primary islands. Each island is unique in its own way. Through its breath-taking views of land to its crystal clear blue waters, the U.S. Virgin Islands is a tourist hotspot. Symbolism of New Design The center spiral is the native tribe’s symbol for water, as the entire territory is surrounded by it. The light blue depicts their trademark crystal blue waters. The white symbol and lines represent the white sand beaches that they are known for while also symbolizing their aim for peace. The yellow symbolizes hope for the future as they were 90% destroyed by Hurricane Irma while also representing the honor citizens have for their land. The red symbolizes its strength to overcome hardships and their determination to rebuild. Having three colors in general are representative of the three main islands, St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas. Justification for Redesign The flag current consists of the coat of arms of the United States. The yellow eagle holds three arrows in its right foot, symbolizing the three main islands being ready for war. The eagle holds an olive branch in the left foot while also face this way, this symbolizes the territory’s desire for peace but their readiness to fight. The flag should be redesigned as something simpler and more memorable. It should be easy to recreate after looking at it while also staying true to its herritage. For the redesign, I chose to go with a tribal symbol as the main center point because this specific tribe was the first people to live there. Ultimately I decided to represent their native herraitage while showing them strength and hope for the future.
